About Great Research

An independent editorial project with practical guides for students and researchers. Here is how the site is made, how it earns money, and what to do when we get something wrong.

What we publish

Step-by-step guides to the craft of research: searching and reviewing the literature, formulating a research question, choosing a methodology, writing a proposal and a thesis, citing correctly, publishing in journals, designing posters and giving conference talks, applying for a PhD and understanding funding and patents. We also compare the software researchers use every day, from reference managers to AI research assistants. Everything appears in English and German.

This domain and its past

Until around 2023 this address was used by a European research project in microelectronics that has since ended; the domain later lapsed. Great Research has no connection to that project, its consortium, its partners or the bodies that funded it, and it does not continue its work.

How we work

  • Sources first. University and library guidance, style manuals, publisher and journal policies, official funding and patent office pages, and the documentation of the tools we describe. Where we describe common practice rather than a rule, we say so.
  • Your rules come first. Examination regulations, supervisors and journals decide what is allowed, for example when it comes to AI tools. Our guides point to those rules; they never replace them.
  • Comparisons are editorial assessments. We compare tools on documented criteria such as features, export formats, data protection, pricing and licence terms. We do not publish invented test scores or star ratings.
  • No ghostwriting. We do not promote services that write your work for you, and we do not recommend using a tool in a way that breaks academic integrity rules.
  • Dated facts. Prices and features change. Time-sensitive statements carry the month they were checked, and substantiated errors get fixed.

How the site is funded

Great Research is a commercial publication. It is funded by advertising and, for some of the tools we describe, by partner links. If you buy something after following a partner link, we may receive a commission; the price is the same for you either way. Partner links are marked.

No provider pays for a mention, a position or a verdict, and no provider sees an article before it is published. Where a free or open-source tool is the better choice, we say so, even though it earns us nothing.

Who writes this

The site is written and edited by a small team rather than by named individual authors, and we do not attach personal bylines or invented credentials to the pages. Editorial responsibility sits with the operator named in the imprint.
